Recuperative heat exchangers are placed downstream of the gas turbine in combined cycle power plants. Instead of wasting energy, the high-temperature gas stream exiting the turbine is directed into the recuperative heat exchanger, where it transfers its thermal energy to a fluid, typically water or steam, inside finned tubes. This process reduces the temperature of the gas while transferring its energy to the fluid.
